Song of the Day: “Hole in the Ocean Floor” by Andrew Bird (2012)

Andrew Bird is a great artist, strangely one I do not listen to all that much, except when he writes songs like “Hole in the Ocean Floor.” This song gives me the same feel as another one of my favorite songs by him “Yawny at the Apocalypse”  , both of these songs I can put on repeat for an hour.  I really like the production on “Hole in the Ocean Floor,” listening to it in the dark, its like you are in the room with the musicians. This song is slightly brooding, but the joy just kind of creeps up on you as you continue to listen.  Where is this hole in the ocean floor, I want to go there, and when I arrive maybe this song will be there to greet me. I want Andrew Bird to do an entire album of songs like this.

I’ve always been impressed by this guy when I’ve heard him but haven’t listened to him much. I like the intimacy in this song that you talk about-like being sandwitched between the musicians on a bench as they pluck it out and Bird occasionally leaning over to whistle in your face. I like the violin flourishes in particular- like a sudden fluttering of birds (no pun intended) and Birds clear, strong singing which reminds me a bit of Jeff Buckley but a little more restrained. Very lovely stuff. I haven’t heard “Yawny at the Apocalypse” but it should definitely be on a list of “best song titles” along with “The KKK Took My Baby Away” and “Happiness is a Warm Gun”.

Definitely some cool ambient sounds. I know some of Andrew Bird’s has hit you pretty strong. This is definitely a good song choice for relaxing in the backyard in the shade. Good call on “best song titles” Bob!
